Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS)
Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS)
Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) is a type of scoliosis that affects adolescents between
the ages of 10 and 18, with no known cause. It is the most common type of scoliosis. Scoliosis often progresses during rapid growth phases, especially around puberty. The treatment of AIS is based on the angle of the curve and the child’s remaining growth. Pain is not always present but may occur if scoliosis is linked to herniated discs or other spinal dysfunctions.
Schroth physical therapy treatment for AIS incorporates:
Parent and adolescent education to understand their scoliotic curve and its effects
Postural education to assume and maintain proper postural and spinal alignment in all positions
Stretching of tight muscles
Strengthening of weak muscles
Proper breathing for expansion of concavities.
Bracing support
With our expertise in scoliosis, we closely monitor the scoliotic curve, provide guidance on bracing, and collaborate with the child’s physician and orthotist as needed.
